Nomads Sky - Update #02


I released the second update for nomads sky, featuring balancing and a new feature :)

NEW FEATURE

  • I started with the gadget system. For now I implemented the directional gadget class and a directional shield for the player. Directional gadgets are controlled with the mouse / right stick of the controller. Directional Gadgets are charged via burning fuel (laser and engine). Once deactivated (either by the player or because the charge was used up) the gadget needs to be fully charged before it can be used again.
  • Some ideas for future directional gadgets are Tractor Beam (push/ pull stuff), dash (controlled impulse in a direction), maybe even some kind of a gun, and many more.




Balancing

  • Processor promethium input reduced/ fuel output slightly reduced (overall the processor produces more fuel now).
  • Ship oxygen consumption increased, but processor oxygen output and tank size increased (overall the player has more time before o2 runs out).
  • Engine fuel consumption halved.



Improvements

  • I changed the way auto damping works. (auto damping decreases speed to 0 over a certain amount of time if enabled)Now the player can freely toggle auto damping on and off as long as the player ship is below maximum speed. To counteract that change auto damping burns fuel now. (more than 5 times as much fuel as the engine thrusters) In future balance passed I will probably increase the auto dampen fuel consumption even further)
  • I constantly try to make the collisions between asteroids and the ship feel better and the damage the ship receives more consistent with how the impact looked. It is not easy but for now, I changed the damage calculation once again to simplify the balancing of the damage values.
  • I overhauled the camera shake system. It should also look more consistent now.
  • I changed some inputs. I also added mouse controls for the ship.
  • I made some adjustments and improvements in the parallax background. I also added a parallax foreground.


ROADMAP UPDATE #3

  • Nondirectional gadgets. Those are simpler in their use because they can just be activated and reloaded. They are ammo based and the player can reload them with cobalt. The gadget produces its ammo with the given cobalt. (takes some time)
  • Some ideas for nondirectional gadgets are a shock wave, rocket swarm, engine boost, auto collect, etc.
  • Sector system for the universe generator. 
  • Asteroid / Debris fields inside a sector
  • Warp gates between sectors
  • Maybe cave systems inside huge asteroids or shipwrecks
